I know the devs kept R in closed testing so we have a better time playing the game when it's finally out, but it doesn't make sense efficiency-wise. It would be better for all of us to release it and find the bugs on a larger scale, while still enjoying the game. I mean, they did that with Q, so why not R?

I'm not a software developer myself, but I can easily imagine that when it comes to feedback on an alpha build, quantity is not always better than quality. Most people do not know how to report bugs in a way that is useful to the person whose job it is to fix the problems, and an open testing process undoubtedly leads to a very low signal to noise ratio in terms of bug reports. This, I imagine, is doubly true when testing a build that contains a lot of radical changes and many potentially game-breaking bugs. Rather than sifting through hundreds of useless, incomplete or duplicate bug reports from the player base at large, it might be better to have a smaller group of skilled testers who knows both how to properly test for bugs and how to properly file useful bug reports.

Then, of course, there is the sad truth that these forums aren't populated entirely by kind, patient, understanding and helpful people. Given the amount of verbal abuse, personal attacks and general unpleasantness that we've witnessed here in the past, I can easily imagine the developers being uneasy at the thought of releasing a severely deficient build to the masses. I vividly remember the flame wars that ensued with the testing of the new combat mechanic in the last open build. The same thing happened once the first videos of the new character animations were released. Given the controversy surrounding these changes, I fully understand why the developers might prefer to put off releasing another build until they have one that shows off these new features in a good way.

So I recently read the post about kickstarters for other zombie games (props to the devs for supporting other indie games ), so I'm just wondering: is anyone else EXTREMELY excited for The Dead Linger?

That game with absolutely no gameplay? Not even a photo?

The interface and gameplay changes a tad, but for the most part the wiki is pretty useful regardless of which server you play on.

I pledged funding to the kickstarter for The Dead Linger, so hopefully it will be good. That said I am currently more excited about Dead State (been watching this since it was first announced around the time the turn based cthulhu rpg on Iron Tower was canceled ) which I also pledged funding for. Also the one for the WiiU, ZombieU <?> which looks really interesting and I belive its a launch title. Erm, I believe there is another one but I can't remember what it is......

What I would really love is an open world Judge Dredd crpg, not playing as Old Stoney Face himself but as new Rookie. Ah a dream never to be fullfilled I suppose. At least there is a new JD film coming out which surely couldn't be worse than the Stallone pos, and if not then there is the also hopefully good indie film Judge Minty. Erm, so back to zombies....

I've always said to take your time on these things, get some spit and polish on it. I definitely don't want the entire project to turn out badly after all the good things there's been and all the potential that the project has. It'd be like getting kicked in the teeth, only it's not a foot it's a fifty megaton bomb of pure negativity.

I seriously considered investing in Dead State, it seemed like a really cool idea and I liked the interactions with NPCs that they are planning on; what made me decide against it was the impenetrable compound and turn-based combat. What most intrigued me about Dead Linger was the immense size of the world that they are promising, so even though I missed the actual kickstarter for it I plan on buying it ASAP; but if they really plan on delivering a a whole zombie planet with the graphics they've been showcasing, it's the biggest indie game I've ever heard of. I hope that it isn't too much for them, because it has A LOT of potential.

You know, I was feeling bad about how slow and clunky ZDay was looking, but compared to these photos of Dead Linger that's been going on longer than our engine transition, for them to only have so little, it makes me pretty happy to have what we have.

I thought it looked cool, but I wasn't sure whether or not to pay $25 for what was at the time really nothing but concept art and ideas. It has a lot of potential, but then again a lot of failed ideas do.

If it's good though, I'll buy it at release for sure.
