Is ARMA2 that resource-heavy?? O_O

You've gotta hand it to Activision & EA, making an FPS is more than just good graphics, it's hundreds of hours labored on optimization...

Optimisation isn't using the same engine for seven years (Call of Duty) and Battlefield 3 isn't an open world like ArmA 2; the ArmA 2 world is huge and comes with great graphics as well, that's why it requires such powerful systems to run it how it is meant to be played. The difference really is that Bohemia have always been about PC Gamers where as Activision and EA are quite the opposite (that being said, admittedly DICE built their engine for the PC and ported it to consoles).

ARMA2 runs with an engine that has been developed for more than 10 years (and it would run on a console, too...I remember Operation FLashpoint running on an XBOX). The Frostbite engine started out 2008 in Bad Company if I remember correctly. Frostbite 2 is just a generation of the engine.

But yeah. ARMA2 has its focus on PCs. Activision and EA need to develop games that will run consoles as well (toned down). ARMA2 may be graphically possible (massively decreased viewing distance) but I doubt you can port the controlls onto a controller without
a) missing out many things
b) making it horrible to control
c) CASUALIZING IT TO DEATH

Here is the change list thus far Sardonic:

Removes a tree if you change cells and land in a tree. Fixes random foresty weirdness and means you always can backtrack out.
Push wheelie bins between cells.
Disabled the stories menu until it can be fixed. We're looking to get a ton of bugs reported despite bolded underlined warnings that we know there are bugs and not to report them, by the look of it.
Fixed crate stacking.
Fixed error where character can't move. Is to do with stairs fix, go figure.
Nerfed axe slightly and kitchen knife more

Pistol plus aiming mechanic (video wouldn't link)

Tweaked migration rates again.
Integration of modified (slightly less hardcore) version of Stormy's reloading mod. <3
Removed anxiety, for now.
NPCs less trigger happy with shotgun / pistols.
Shotgun sound distance reduced a bit.
New aiming melee system.
New shove mechanic (even when unarmed)

Can we have some ETA? It's been fucking ages. No offence, I'm usually patient; but you've absolutely left us in the dark which resorts to us relying on patch-notes that were out of date literally months ago. This is getting slightly ridiculous. In before 'when it's done'.

I think the devs might be working on some more features while bugfixing. I imagine that the person who is trying to figure out why the game is not running smoothly on some computers is not doing the textures for example. Would this assumption be right or am I completely off?

Not to white knight here but please try and refrain from posting these comments, if you want information on the state of the game the devs have been quite active on this and many threads, take the time and read through and you'll get a good idea of how it's going and how close they are. I would also recommend following the devs on twitter as you'll get random tid bits as well.

I know you're excited for the game and it will come out sooner then later, but you have to have a tad bit of patience.

Actually the last time they told us of progress was the "in two days" statement a few weeks ago.

Yes, this is completely accurate. Whenever there is something slowing us down, we endeavour to get other stuff done which doesn't impact on this. Like, for example, the female models. This is something that can be done while the issues are being resolved. Whether or not they'll be finished before the update hits remains to be seen, but it does mean that we've got stuff for future updates prepped in the time that these issues have been going on.

So, my point is, every day of delay on this update is a day saved for another update to come.

We understand what you are trying to say. But having been a developer for a few years now, don't you have some kind of programmer's intuition on an ETA? (Factoring in all the last-minute issues that you have come to expect from experience)

We don't care if it's a month, two months, whatever. Please give us an ETA, or else we'll have to resort to the likes of "In zombie language, two days = a month."

In addendum to Binks: the necessary optimisation advances we've been working on appear to be going down a treat, so the delay has certainly benefitted the code - if not our/your collective sanity.

We don't want to give any more ETAs as we just don't want to break 'em when if something else unforeseen crops up.

Eep. Okay, here's the thing. There is at least a couple of days work in putting stuff back into the version which got ripped out for optimisation / bug tracking downing. Possibly a week. But probably a couple of days. So it's that long at least.

On top of that, there's sorting out this issue. Now that is impossible to say. It could be a day or two, it could be a week. I couldn't with any honesty pin a time on that. I could only assume, based on similar issues from the past and give you some sort of average. But with these sorts of things, you don't know how to fix a problem until you find the source of the problem. And once found, typically the solution is fairly quick. So it'd be like asking, "how long does it take you to find a needle in a haystack based on your experience finding needles in haystacks?". Sometimes you chance upon the needle straight away. Sometimes you've methodically divided all the hay before you find the needle.

Thanks for being patient and explaining. You are really great at community management, particularly with a**holes like me. (lol)

But don't worry about it. The majority of us will be playing Diablo 3 anyway. It's perfect actually, because by the time we're done with Diablo 3, 0.2.0r will be out!

Didn't even relate to the problem at hand. I get penny arcade is being payed by blizzard to do damage control, but you don't have to shove their horrible arguments where they aren't even relevant.

Actually I was talking about what has changed since then, because that list was posted a month and a half ago.
